LHR: The Church

The Church is a must-do event at least once for every hearty traveller. So named because it used to actually be held in an abandoned church, it is a Rugby style Aussie beer fest that is wild beyond your imagination.

CORRECTION!! The Church has moved to Clapham Junction! You get there via an "Overland" Train (non-Tube commuter rail) from either Waterloo or Victoria Station. The quickest route from the Melia White House Hotel is the Victoria tube from Warren Street Station to Victoria Station. Then Overland trains to Clapham Junction. At the Clapham Junction Station, follow the signs for the "Way Out" and Town Center/St. John's Hill St. The Grand is just across the street and up the hill about 50 yards. You can't miss it, especially with all the crazies milling about. The London Overland trains in these zones accept the Oyster card, so it really makes it easy if you have it. Refer to this Oyster map. See my Oyster Card post.

The Church convenes every Sunday. Doors open at 12 noon and everyone's kicked out by 3:30. You'll pay £7 to get in the door, and £9 for each trio beer bag you buy inside. Well, you actually buy beer tickets and then go to the bar and ask your your favorite trio of beers. Most people tie the beer bag around their belt loop and it acts as a mini cooler on your ass.

An Oyster card is totally cool to have. It doesn't cost you any extra, and if you find yourself in London a lot, it's invaluable.

You can get in free if you are wearing a costume of some sort. All I had was Cluck, and that did not classify as a costume (although I tried...)

Be prepared for some sort of a International Beer drinking competition. If you go with a group of friends, try to make get enough Yanks to make a go of it. In the two times that I've been there, we have not been well represented, if at all. Good luck.

The Emcee will rib the Yanks, but that won't stop the place from rockin' to Bon Jovi at the breaks. Besides, hes an equal opportunity ribber...

For the die-hards, there is indeed an after party party. Ask a regular where it is because I'm not certain that I have the name right. I think its called the Backpacker pub near the Shepherds Bush tube stop. This is near where the original location for The Church was.

Correction (10/31/2010) The main after hours party is at the Aussie Bar called "Walkabout" near the Shepherd's Bush station. Follow the gaggle...

Go and have a great time!

Here are just a few of the photos from my short 3 hour Church excursion this past Sunday...

Aussies I met on the tube. Amazingly, I guessed right that they were going to the Church.

The bar is well organized chaos...

When you're done, just toss 'em...

Cluck gets a lot of action, as you'll see in the next few shots. I swear, none of the shots were orchestrated. Cluck just seems to bring out the animal in everybody!

The Aussie chicks that made a go for it at the beer drinking competition.

Some Louisiana boys (and girl). Notice the stage is full of girls. The Church allows 'em to get on stage for the closing dance songs. Quite a show...

The sea of inebriated humanity spills out onto the streets at 3:30. Please be polite and not piss on the sidewalk or toss yor cans. Besides, there are Church bouncers every 25' to be sure you don't...

MUC: Mike's Bike Tours

I gotta tell y'all about Mike's Bike Tours in Munich. I was told that this is a tour that you shouldn't pass up when there's good weather, and on my last lucky reserve callout to Munich, we had excellent weather. So, throwing caution to the wind, I decided to meander on down to Mike's Bike Tours and see what's up. Of course, Cluck came along for the ride.

Mike's Bike Tours has you meet under the clock tower in the Marienplatz. They don't need a reservation, just show up and you'll be accomodated! We first met Frankie,

one of the famed bike tour guides, a cool guy from Hawaii that knows all the great watering holes. The number of people that showed up that day required a split up into two groups, one led by Frankie and the other led by the owner and namesake of the tour company, Mike.

I ended up with Mike. He is an excellent guide, serving many neat little tidbits of Munich history during the tour. Frankie, from what I hear, has a special flair for adding a party atmosphere for the tour.

The tour lasted 4 hours and hit many Munich highlights, including dinner at an authentic beer garden. Of course, Munich has so much to offer, that 4 hours will just whet your whistle as to what this grand city has to offer.

The bike ride is not a difficult one, with just a few inclines. No problem walking your bike if you need to. If you're a novice bike rider, you might be challenged, probably more so with a fear of scratching the nice Mercedes that line the streets.

The most relaxing part of the tour is through the English Gardens, a beautiful park in the center of the city.

The tour ends at the Hofbrau Haus, one of the oldes beer halls in Munich. Even though there are other beer halls, Mikes still likes the Hofbrau Haus for its consistent and authentic beer hall atmosphere.

So give Mike's Bikes a shot. It was a hoot and a great way to get a feel for the city. Of course, ending at the Hofbrau Haus was pretty cool too!

I took a lot of pics, and here are a few of the best, in no particular order:

Cluck

Cluck is the the name of my rubber chicken mascot. I adopted him after he was found by some flight attendants after a flight. Since then, I've taken him around with me, mostly as a conversation starter.

This blog has been an idea I've had for a while, and putting Cluck in a few of my pictures seemed like the natural next step.

Unfortunately, in late 2007, Cluck was lost at the Intercontinental Hotel in Sao Paulo, Brazil. He was left at the pool area after a wild party, and never to be seen again, despite repeated attempts to locate him with the Brazilian staff at the hotel. No one really knows what happened. He may have tried to fly, he may hav just been tossed, we'll nevern know.

When I started to return to Sao Paulo after the 777 started to go there, Cluck was remembered by many of the hotel staff. They would ask me where my 'frango' is (chicken in Brazilian Portuguese). I decided I needed new Cluck.

All I wanted for Christmas in 2008 was a new rubber chicken, and a Staples 'That was Easy' button. I did indeed get a rubber chicken, but he was the only one left at Spencer gifts. He was an 'Old Fart' rubber chicken. He had very unchicken-like gray skin, gray hair, and glasses. To add to that, he would fart if you squeezed him. I can just imagine the product develpment guys marrying the age old 'Whoopee Cushion' with a rubber chicken.

Cluck 2 lasted about 2 months. He was quite a unique conversation piece. Probably because he was so dad-gum ugly. And of course, the unsuspecting person would grab him and he'd make a surprising fart sound.

Cluck 2 was literally stolen from me at 'The Cage' bar in Narita Japan. I'm not sure who did it, but with the crowds that frequent that proud Karoake establishment, it could be anybody.
So, if you know the whereabouts of an unclaimed ugly gray rubber chicken, please let me know so he can be returned to his rightful owner.

Cluck 3 was purchased online and is currently in my custody. In his short stint so far as the reigning cluck, he has traveled a lot. To deter another international adbuction, I've graced Cluck with some identifying marks (like his name, and this blog URL) in permanent ink.
So, if you see a rubber chicken in a pawn shop that matches those marks, please contact me so I can claim him!

Anyway, enjoy Cluck's adventures. He's not quite as famous as Flat Stanley, but his reputation is growing with every post!
